In case the parent or caregiver is still around in a person’s life that is pretty much where the line ends. The Substitute Sense of Self can be seen as the result of the real approval of the parent – or, ‘virtual approval’ when, later in life, the parent’s criteria have been internalized and are generated by the person who has a lack of Sense of Self and is therefore dependent on the Substitute Sense of Self.
